Small fire reported at Fukushima nuclear plant
TOKYO —
A fire broke out in a rubbish pile at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex on Tuesday, the operator said, the latest in a series of incidents at the crippled plant.
Workers discovered flames licking at piles of cardboard boxes placed near an incineration facility shortly before 1 p.m., Tokyo Electric Power Co said.
The fire damaged an area of about four meters by two meters, but was put out in a hour, it said.
The fire did not affect radiation levels in the plant, and no one was injured, it said.
TEPCO has struggled with a growing number of incidents at the plant including several leaks of radioactive water, more than two years after the worst nuclear disaster in a generation.
Improvised fixes put in place since the disaster leave it vulnerable to problems and at the mercy of nature, with no immediate end in sight, critics say.
Figure skater Ando announces she is a single mother

Former figure skating world champion Miki Ando, 25, announced Monday that she gave birth to a baby girl in April. Ando, who is not married, made the surprise announcement on TV Asahi’s “Hodo Station.”
“I made the decision to have the baby because I wanted to pursue my happiness as a woman,” Ando said, adding that she is determined to represent Japan at next year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
According to Nikkan Sports, the baby’s father is a former Japanese figure skater but she has not talked about him yet.
After the world championships in 2011, Ando split from coach Nikolai Morozov and has not had a coach since then. Last month, Ando performed on the rink for the first time in 10 months.
Panda back on view after being confirmed not pregnant
TOKYO —
A giant female panda at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo went back on public view Tuesday after it was confirmed that she is not pregnant, zoo officials said.
Shin Shin was removed from public display on June 4 after she started showing signs of possible pregnancy. But it was a false alarm, zoo officials said.
Shin Shin and her male partner Ri Ri have been at the zoo since February 2011. Shin Shin’s first cub died last July, after becoming the first giant panda to be born at the facility in 24 years.
